Grand Cherokee WJ/WG

1999 - 2004

In 1999 the top model of all Jeeps started out into the new millennium with freshly ironed clothing and a streamlined face. However, what appeared outwardly to be only slightly modified was essentially a new automobile. This Jeep inherited only 127 parts from its predecessor.
Systematic technical progress was hidden unobtrusively on the inside. The whole self-supporting body construction was revised by Porsche Engineering in order to make the structure both lighter and more robust and above all stiffer. The chassis remained basically unchanged with fixed axles at the front and rear but with improved comfort through the improved suspension.
Progress under the hood did not extend to the cast-iron veteran there.
From its 3956 cm³ the inline six-cylinder produced a hefty 190 HP (170 kW) or 197 HP (145 kW) in the USA.
The old classic fully cast-iron V8 was now finally retired.
A more modern colleague from Chrysler with an overhead camshaft on each of the two aluminum alloy cylinder heads showed brisk progress. Depending on the version the 4701 cm³ produced 220 to 238 HP (162 to 175 kW).
The turbodiesel power unit from VM in Italy added a cylinder and now with five cylinders provided 140 HP (103 kW) from 3124 cm³, which with a maximum total weight of 2505 kg avoided haste and rushing. From 2002, the stronger 5 cylinder engine with 2685 cc and 163 PS (120 kW) took over.
